Porcelain tiles are widely regarded as the best choice for outdoor use due to their exceptional strength and durability. These tiles are highly resistant to harsh weather conditions, including rain and extreme heat. They are also slip resistant, making them a safer option for high-traffic areas like stairs, pathways, and pool areas.

Outdoor tiles are usually 8-12mm thick and secured on a prepared concrete surface using tile adhesive and grout, offering a smooth and elegant finish. They are ideal for smaller areas or intricate designs, such as alfresco areas, balconies, and pool surrounds, and are available in various materials, including porcelain tiles, ceramic tiles, and natural stone tiles.

Pavers, on the other hand, are larger blocks between 20-30mm and are designed to be interlocked, creating a seamless and durable surface. Commonly made from porcelain or natural stone, pavers are perfect for large outdoor spaces like driveways, pathways, and expansive patios. While outdoor tiles focus on aesthetic detail and versatility, pavers prioritise durability and can be laid without a concrete substrate.

Outdoor tiles can be installed on a variety of surfaces, including concrete and existing tiles, but proper surface preparation is essential to ensure durability and prevent cracking or shifting over time.

• Concrete surfaces: Ensure the surface is clean, free of cracks, and has the appropriate slope for water drainage before installing tiles.
• Existing tiles: To tile over existing tiles, ensure the surface is clean, level, and free of cracks, and use a suitable primer to enhance adhesion for the new tiles.

The ideal surface for laying outdoor pavers is a well-prepared road base, typically consisting of a layer of gravel for stability and sand for leveling. Pavers can also be installed on concrete, provided the surface is clean, level, and has proper drainage. Regardless of the surface, ensuring it is stable and adequately prepared will help to prevent shifting, cracking, or unevenness over time, creating a long-lasting and visually appealing outdoor space.
