Tiles come in a variety of shapes and sizes. What are large format tiles? What are the benefits of using large floor tiles? What should you keep in mind when it comes to large floor tiles?

Large floor tiles, called large format tiles, are not simply what appears “big” to our eye. It refers to any tile that is 600x600mm and above. Some popular sizes are 750x750mm, 800x800mm, 600x1200mm and 750x1500mm.

What advantages do they provide? Large format tiles will help to make a room appear larger. How is that possible? This is because the larger the tiles, the fewer grout lines there are. Having fewer grout lines visually makes the room appear to open up and be more streamlined. Are large tiles for you? They could be. Consider two important factors when choosing tiles.

One, the floor tile should never be smaller than the wall tile. It will look visually unbalanced. So if you are using wall tiles, consider what your wall tile will be.

Secondly, large tiles are not one size fits all. They would be okay for say a family room. But in a tiny room, using large tiles would look strange because you would only have a couple of tiles in the room.

Benefits Of Large Floor Tiles

There are other benefits to using large floor tiles if your room size allows for it. For example, have you ever had to spend a day cleaning grout lines? With larger tiles, there are fewer grout lines to clean, so you save time cleaning. Also, there is less cleaning product to purchase, which means you also save money. Morever, your installation will last longer. Another fact is that using large format tiles means you need fewer tiles. This can result in savings in time and energy as well.

What about a long hallway or a rectangular room? Using large tiles that are rectangular, allows you to lengthen these spaces like square tiles widen a room.

Keep in mind that your floor should be level before installing large format tiles. Smaller tiles may be able to disguise an uneven substrate. But with large floor tiles, this unevenness will be noticeable because the tile will slope. Not only will this be a bit of an eye sore, but it will also be a tripping hazard.
